I have 4 TYAN servers each with 4 local drives, all connected to 1 switch. I would like to create a distributed storage from them, so that all four servers will share their local drives and will act as one big volume. Having a hard time finding a free and quick solution for that. I don't care about speeds, replication and redundancy. Thanks!
Distributed Storage
DR SAN Solution
We currently have a Datacenter which we run all of our production servers, about 40 of them on a DELL Equalogic SAN. We have DR space across the country and have the pipe to get data from one to the other. Our challenge has been trying to find a cost effective solution for storage. We want to be able to have the same functionality in VMWare(HA, VMotion, etc..) so we want a SAN type solution, but not one which has a price tag of 30K.
We have 2 hosts that this storage will be connected to and we want to make sure it's shared so if one of the DR hosts go down, it will be still be operational.
I am not sure if a lower class NAS which can do iSCSI targeting or something like Microsoft's Server 2012 Virtual SAN would be able to handle the 40 servers we have.
The 40 servers include SQL, Exchange, etc.. so it's doing some fairly decent iOPS....
Dell PowerVault MD3800i vs 2 synology RS10613xs+ in HA
I am still planning out my needs for my small setup..
I am going to be running around 10VMs for now over 10GB copper to ISCSI targets... and i was wondering which is better:
1 Dell PowerVault MD3800i with dual controller and 10 x 4TB drives : 25kUSD
or
2 Synology RS10613xs+ in HA with 10 x 4 TB Drives : 21K USD
I like the synology option because later on i can slowly phase in larger capacity drives if need be like 6tb or 8 TB drives with a little firmware upgrade... unlike the Dell box which Dell tells me the max it would have for the forseeable future is 4TB drives ..
What do you guys think ?? the VMs will be 2 x active Directory... Email .. File server.. database server..
Are synology boxes trust worthy and reliable ?
Need to add more SAN storage for Vmware
We have an older HP msa 2312i san that is at capacity, I was just going to add another disk shelf but the gen 2 stuff is hard to find and what we can find is a refurb with a 30 day warranty. Umm no thanks.
So I figure I will just add a new SAN in the current gen and should be ok for a while. We are looking at both HP msa 1040 and a Dell md3200i.
Our main part for this expansion is to move and build out a bit more of our teat network as we have some major software upgrades we need to do that I want to test before hand.
So budget dollars are a bit tight this year so I was thinking of putting in some NL SAS drives vs 15k sas drives. Obvisouly the trade off in spindle speed is a bit of a concern. But with the cost/size difference can we offset that with more disks?
I figure I will run a raid 10 on the new box the old one is raid 5 with hot...
Nas planning and features.
Hello everyone!
I am currently planning to buy an 8 bay NAS
synology DS1815+ or the droboB800i, i haven't made my choice yet.
Both of them will have 8 bay
with 2 TB HDD in each bay , my question is which raid can i configure on an 8
bay nas??
5 servers will be backing up
their data on this nas. And I want to ensure that the backup is highly
available and protected.
And will this type of nas work
with ntfs?? can i map drives and give ntfs permissions?? (I have a domain environment)
finally the drobo b800i support
iscsi, am i able to use iscsi for certain servers that the backup software
requires local storage and map a network drive for other servers at the same
time??
my point is will the drobo
function as a san/nas at the sam time??
Thank you.
Are you a SSD fan or a HDD supporter?
Here at Spiceworks I see more of our laptops equipped with SSDs. I'm not sure if that's just because the tech gear comes standard with that option or by choice from our IT pro gods.
I'm one of those users who love the update to SSD. Truth be told, I didn't know the difference between an SSD vs HDD (#MarketingDude). Not being as savvy as you SpiceHeads, Iread this helpful postfrom PCMag to get some more insight.
Through my reading I also found some funny jokes in this tech debate. Spiceworks Green Guy Sam-I-AmfromMicronposted this funny photo.
Remote offices accessing central office file server
Hello Gang!
Could we discuss possible solutions for remote offices accessing a central office file server:
- The aim is to have local file servers for remote offices
- Remote file servers sync with central office file server and vice versa
- Smooth transition so shouldn't have to do anything else aside from accessing, working on the file etc.
Currently, we're still utilizing:
- Server 2003 Standard for file (we've moved most of our stuff to 2008R2/2012R2)
What I've looked at:
- Microsoft BranchCache
- Cloud based SharePoint which we have a subscription for
Any other ideas what you lovely people can come up with?
Thanks,
Daniel Martins
Storage Array setup with CSV's
I have a MD3000i and 2 clustered Hyper-V 2012 servers. I have a quick question related to how one uses virtual disks and CSV's. In the past I have always created a virtual disk on our MD3000i for each virtual server. Thus - I kept that process when using my new 2012 cluster shared volumes (one to one ration of MD3000i virtual disk to one CSV). More management I know, but beyond that is there any performance issue I would need to be concerned about with this setup versus creating two large virtual disks on my MD3000i and then 2 large CSV's? My understanding from the MD3000i Dell guys is that the first virtual disks created will have the best performance. Thus I'm putting my high IO VM's at the top of the list.
Thoughts?
Dumping the SAN because I feel like I'm in quickSAN...
With a storage shortage on the very near horizon...
Currently we have a SAN with 16TB storage on the production side and 12TB on the DR side. I'm at an expensive fork in the road. Do I continue with the SAN or do go back to physical servers with shared storage?
Currently I have my data, 9 virtual Windows 2008 servers, and 36 virtual workstations running off this SAN. (I need to add 20 more virtual workstations.)
Sticking with the SAN I know what's required. If I wanted to dump the SAN, what route should I take hardware wise? I don't necessarily mean brand... Do I throw up 3 physical Windows 2012 R2 boxes in failover with shared (iSCSI - think QNAP) storage?
For backup, I already use StorageCraft and store the backups on Exablox appliances.
For extra credit - if going with shared storage on an iSCSI target, favorite RAID setups for this?
Outsourcing - they have no idea!
Hey folks,
So I decided to leave the company where I currently work and handed in my notice period a month ago. I now have four weeks left.
In this time as I am leaving, they have decided to move over to an outsourced provider. The provider is giving my employer a plan which I will not be able to read (I of course don't really want to as I am leaving). But anyway...
I get a call from one of their consultants to go over the current setup. In the call they have said they will be looking to move our Raid 10 DAS and Raid 10 SAN, also likely our 4 NAS boxes (raid 6) over to a "Raid 5 or 50 setup on each box"
He said "He is suprised they are currently raid 10 as they do not recommend it due to cost and as it is not much better anyway and they support raid 5." - I said to him, why not raid 6 and he replied "We like and will be suggesting raid 5...
Is there a way to handle files sitting in multiple cloud storages and ECM?
I have my personal files sitting in Google and Dropbox and office files in Sharepoint.
Is there a way I can work with them simultaneously?
Buffalo LinkStation Mini (2x1TB; RAID 0,1; GLAN) (UBLSWSX20TLR1EU) disk change ?
Buffalo LinkStation Mini (2x1TB; RAID 0,1; GLAN) (UBLSWSX20TLR1EU)

Unable to download latest Firmware
I'm trying to update my LS-VL NAS box from v1.68 to 1.70. The built-in updater does not find v1.70, but it is listed on the downloads page. When trying to download from the Buffalo website the task hangs immediately after starting and never finishes. Tested with IE/FireFox/Chrome on Win7 & Chrome/Javelin on Android without success.
Link to the download in question - http://www.buffalo-technology.com/Download_t3f.php?elif=%2Fuserfiles%2Ffile%2Fdownloads%2FLS-series-...
Can anyone else reproduce the issue, or shed some light on how it can be resolved? Can I take the firmware from the US website and flash it to my box?
Bulk SSD purchase
Does anyone know of a vendor or site that sells cheap SSD's in bulk?
MSP Options - White Label Providers for File Sync & Share, & Backups
Hi All,
We are currently a small Australian IT company looking for suitable partners to white label solutions for Private & Public Cloud File Sync & Share, as well as Backups.
I've been reading thru the Spiceworks forums for the last couple of days, and no doubt picked up quite a few tips from many experienced spiceheads.
Our typical client would be approx 5-20 users, with offices in geographically diverse locations, with 50% of their workforce on laptops working out of the office most of the time. Many are currently using dropbox as their public file sync system.
We have implemented several Egnyte solutions as a reseller in the past, and while there has been hiccups along the way, eventually it worked quite well. They have changed their pricing model, and recently approached us to sign up on their MSP arrangement, which is why i am...
NAS appliance for Veeam backups
Anyone using a large rack mount NAS appliance for a Veeam backup repository? I am a little concerned about the storage performance during reverse incremental rollups seeing how this will most likely be SATA drives. I would like some feedback on any performance or reliability issues that you might have had and what products you would recommend. I did some preliminary looking around and so far I seem to like the Synology and Netgear products. They both support iSCSI which I want to use. I am looking at a single 2u unit with about 40+TB of storage for now.
Checked out Exablox too. They were a bit too pricey as we would need to by 3 units for that amount of useable storage.
Thanks for your input.
Dell MD3200i Thermal Sensor location?
Hello,
We recently acquired a MD3200i SAN, and it is signaling it has a bad controller. Specifically, it is stating the following errors:
Storage array: MD3200i
Component reporting problem: Host I/O card (Left)
Status: Not available
Location: RAID Controller Module (1)
Host card interface type: Unknown
Component requiring service: Host I/O card (Left)
Service action (removal) allowed: No
Service action LED on component: No
Storage array: MD3200i
Failure number: 41
Storage array: MD3200i
Component reporting problem: Thermal sensor
Status: Unknown
Location: RAID Controller Module 1, Slot 1
Component requiring service: Temperature sensor
Based on those errors, I am wondering if I can just replace the Temperature Sensor, or I have to replace the whole controller? I also saw mention somewhere of a battery issue, and thebatteries are selling on ebay...
Looking for SAN opinions for SMB 12-15 TB
Looking for a good solution for a 12-15 TB usable SAN for healthcare. I have look at NIMBLE C215 and DOT HILL 3824 and am not convinced about any.and Price point is a concern and pricing should not be over $35,000 and really hoping for much less. I currently have a lefthand P4300 which is a 7.2 TB san. It seems that my current max on IOPS is about 2000. Need more info on these or similar products. Sales persons are driving me nuts.
What is important:
what is important: 1. scalability 2. reliability 3. maintenance costs over the next 5 years. 4. support
It seems that my IOPS can range from Max. 7999 and AVG at 1867. I have all Virtual Machines and currently iscsi p4300 lefthand. I am looking to increase sizing and reliability is very important. Life expectancy is also a consideration. I am with a consulting group for larger projects and...
Shared Storage for two Hyper-V servers
Good day all,
We currently have a Dell R710, 12 core and 64GB RAM, running Windows Server 2008 R2, and using Hyper-V to manage 7-10 VMs.
It has been our testing grounds, and it is now time to expand.
We are ready to get another server, so that we can have a proper backup, and have a storage array that they both can share.
We were thinking of a Shared SAS storage, as it is just storage for the two machines, in case one needs to be taken down.
When we brought up our desired solution with a Dell representative, they suggested getting a storage area network (SAN).
The reason was that their new R730, a 13th generation version of our R710 (11th generation), has 12GB/s SAS Host Bus Adapter, while the R710 has a 6GB/s SAS Host Bus Adapter. I guess it is two different generations of Host Bus Adapters.
Is it true that these two machines, with different...
SSDs and How can HP and Dell justify their prices?
Or my post is more aptly titled "I want my cake and I want to eat it now."
What kind of cake? Well, the server kind with solid state drives. I really want to go this way soon, but the prices being charged by HP and Dell make the goal so very far off. I realize that I can grab other branded drives and try to make them work, but there are known issues in doing so. I have been predominately HP, but do have one Dell and have worked with them in the past. They are great server vendors.
Right now my servers all have standard SAS drives. Yes, buying vendor-specific drives have always come with a premium whether Dell or HP. However, the delta on SSDs just puts it out of reach. Honestly, how can they justify their premium?
I get that there are different types, MLC vs SLC, and there are differences in performance and wear that makes one more...
